Statement by Reno Mayoral Candidate Eddie Lorton:
Today’s sneaking of an amendment into AB36, an already bad bill for Reno, by a Las Vegas politician and marijuana lobbyist at the request of Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve was a clear message to the Citizens of Reno that she has no respect for their wishes.
The citizens of Reno through The Charter Review Committee not once, but twice advised the Reno City Council not to change the current charter from a weak to strong Mayor form of government, giving the mayor broad and veto powers (akin to a dictatorship) as they deemed it irrelevant and unnecessary. This bill along with this new amendment would change the current city charter and circumvent case law I established at the Nevada Supreme Court in 2014, on behalf of the citizens of Reno, upholding term limits that were demanded by voters overwhelmingly AGAIN not once, but twice and would allow a city council member to serve almost twenty-four years.
This action is a supreme example of the contempt Mayor Hillary Schieve and her lobbyist cronies have for the citizens of Reno. They would rather change the rules for themselves and their friends than change the rules in favor of their constituents; For example…paying sixty-four thousand dollars to rent a “beached whale” from a personal friend instead of paying a fifty-thousand dollar insurance deductable to fix Traner Pool, so our kids can swim this summer. This is a clear example of where her priorities lie and are in deep contrast to mine.
This Cannot Stand.
I will stand up and fight again for what is right. I will be the people’s Mayor, not a Mayor that serves special interest groups or lobbyist friends.
